Port Philip Bay lies at the southern end of Melbourne, Victoria – Australia’s second largest city. There are a number of beaches inside the Bay including: St Kilda, Brighton and Frankston where you’ll find all the attractions of a large international city with night life as an extra; Dromada, Rosebud, Sorrento and Portsea on the Eastern side which has quieter, more family friendly beaches and Queenscliff, St Leonards and Port Arlington on the Western side. From South of Dromada the landmass narrows into a peninsula and on the Southern or seaward side there are some fine surfing beaches including Sorrento Back beach and Ocean Grove Surf beach.

Summer Water temperatures on the sheltered inside of the Bay are generally between 22-25C at the northern (Melbourne City) end, between 20-23C in the middle of the eastern side, 20-22C in the Southern Bay and, as might be expected in a lower range on the unprotected Southern seaward side. Given Melbourne’s southerly position in Australia winter, temperatures can be significantly lower but as compensation you might be lucky enough to see a penguin or two.
