Georgian Bay is comprised of a gently sloping basin with a deeper area by the Bruce Peninsula where it can be as deep as 60m just 100m from the shore. However, most areas don’t exceed about 25m in depth with about 10m being normal close to the shore, and water temperatures range from about 60.8 F in June to 66.2F in August. From December to March much of Georgian Bay is frozen and covered in ice.

The coves and islands are ideal for sailing and kayaking as well as for swimming, and there are several naturist beaches. Wasaga beach with its 9 miles of pure white sand is the world’s longest freshwater beach.

Best Time to Visit Georgian Bay

The summer months from May to September are the best time for visits to Georgian Bay for sailing, fishing and kayaking, and the water is warm enough for a pleasant swim. Georgian Bay is easy to reach from Toronto International Airport, just 81 miles away. There are numerous small airlines which can take you to Parry Sound, or you can drive to Georgian Bay in two hours. Buses such as Ontario Northland go from Toronto to Parry Sound daily, and a local bus will whisk you to Georgian Bay in just 10 minutes.
