The Dead Sea, otherwise known as the Salt Sea, is a lake which borders Jordan and Israel and at 432 meters below sea level is the lowest place on Earth.
It also contains one of the highest amounts of salt in any body of water in the world with nearly nine times as much salt as in an ocean. Consequently life in the Dead Sea cannot survive which affords it its name.

It is possible to visit the Dead Sea as a day trip from Eilat, Tel Aviv or Jerusalem if you are staying in Israel. A bicycle ride along Highway 90 from Jerusalem is a pleasant scenic route or alternatively Israeli bus company Egged run daily services from Eilat (line 444), Tel Aviv (line 421), Jerusalem (lines 486 and 487) and Beersheva and Arad (line 384). Taxi services also provide access to the lake.
